Photos from Quito taken on Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Today we went to the airport but found out that our flight was canceled due to Tropical Storm Ernesto in Miami. We were told to return the next morning, early. When we came back from the airport in the morning, I managed to take some fairly nice photos of the volcanoes that are visible from Elsa's roof in Calderón (Google Maps link). The delay in our schedule meant that we had some time to drive around the city and take pictures of things. I wanted to take some photos of American fast-food joints and their menus, so that was one of the things we did. Those food photos are here.

We also ate some guinea pig, finally (we searched for it two years ago and never managed to get any). Grilled guinea pig is a local favorite. It is called "cuy" (pronounced KOO-ee), plural cuyes (pronounced KOO-yes). The same place that sold us the cuy also sold grilled conejos (rabbits). The cuy was OK, but a little too salty.

The other really interesting thing we saw today was a street-performing artist who made a complex painting using only spray paint. This really amazed us. Unfortunately, his art work just isn't the kind of thing we wanted to hang on our walls, so we didn't buy one (only $10), but we did give him a dollar for the great show!
